Nephrite and jadeite are different materials
Nephrite is an amphibole mineral with an interlocking fibrous structure. Jadeite is a pyroxene mineral with a different crystal structure. On the Mohs scale, nephrite is commonly reported around 6 to 6.5 and jadeite around 6.5 to 7, but hardness alone cannot identify a bangle and a scratch test can damage the polish. The useful distinction is the material conclusion on a qualified report.
