Xinjiang, Hetian and nephrite are related words in jade commerce, but they answer different questions. Nephrite is a material identification. Xinjiang is a geographic claim. Hetian can refer to a region, a market tradition or a broad trade description. Treating them as interchangeable is how buyers end up with confident wording and very little evidence.
Material and origin are different conclusions
A gemological report may identify a bangle as nephrite and state whether detectable treatment is present. That does not automatically prove where the rough stone was mined or collected. Geographic origin can require provenance records, supplier documentation and chain-of-custody information that a standard material report does not contain.
- Material question: is the bangle nephrite, jadeite or another material?
- Treatment question: has it been dyed, impregnated, bleached or repaired?
- Origin question: what evidence links this exact piece to Xinjiang?
What evidence is worth asking for
For a modest purchase, a clear written description and honest condition photos may be reasonable. For a high-value bangle, ask for the report number, supplier invoice or lot record, and a photograph that matches the exact item. A map, a certificate with no verifiable issuer, or the phrase directly from Xinjiang is not the same as traceable evidence.

- Ask whether the document covers material only or also geographic origin.
- Keep the seller's written origin statement with the invoice.
Why the same region can produce different-looking stone
Nephrite from a broad geographic area can vary in colour, grain, translucency and weathering. Lighting and thickness change the appearance as well. A cool white bangle photographed beside a blue background may look very different from the same piece in warm indoor light. Origin is not a substitute for inspecting the body and condition.

- Ask for a side view showing thickness and grain.
- Do not infer origin from colour alone.
How to write a careful product description
A responsible listing separates tested facts from trade language: material identified as nephrite, origin stated as supplier information, treatment disclosed, and measurements taken from the exact bangle. This wording may sound less dramatic, but it gives a buyer something they can actually evaluate.
- Use material, origin and treatment as separate fields.
- Avoid presenting a region name as a laboratory grade.
- State what is unknown instead of filling the gap with a superlative.
A practical decision rule
Pay for the stone you can inspect and the evidence you can verify. If a seller refuses to separate material from origin, or changes the story when you ask for a report number, pause the purchase no matter how attractive the photos look.
