Seed jade is a translation of the Chinese term zi liao, commonly used for material shaped by natural river transport rather than cut directly from a primary mountain vein. The term describes a material category and history, not a guarantee of colour or value.
The idea behind the term
River movement can round the surface of nephrite and leave a skin or outer layer with natural colour variation. The amount of weathering is not measured by a universal number, so sellers may use the same label for pieces with very different surface histories. English translations vary, so listings may say seed jade, pebble jade, river material, or simply zi liao.

What the label does not prove

How to evaluate a seed-jade bangle

- Confirm that the image shows the exact bangle being offered.
- Ask which areas retain natural skin and which areas were polished or carved.
- Record the agreed description and measurements on the quotation.
A useful way to think about it
Treat seed jade as a piece of material history that may add character, not as a shortcut to quality. The strongest purchase decision combines clear terminology, honest images, a comfortable fit, and written provenance information.
